“Open Source Links Internal and External Clouds” – Citrix CEO Talks About Purpose of Xen Cloud Platform

“Xen Cloud Platform is open source software to combat VMware’s vCloud. It forms a bridge between clouds inside and outside a business,” said Mark Templeton, President & CEO of Citrix Systems, at a press briefing on September 4 while visiting Japan.
Xen Cloud Platform was announced on August 31, 2009 by Xen.org (currently under the realm of Citrix), the developer of Xen virtual machine software. This platform uses Xen to achieve interoperability between virtual machine systems. It uses OVF (Open Virtualization Format) as the virtual machine format for virtual disks and so on. This enables interoperability (migration of virtual machines, etc.) between external virtual machine services that support Xen Cloud Platform and virtual machines operated within businesses using Citrix XenServer.
Templeton referred to external virtual machine services provided on the Internet as “public external clouds,” and groups of virtual machines operated within businesses as “private/internal clouds.” He emphasized that Xen Cloud Platform links the two types of clouds.
Among the participants in Xen Cloud Platform are processor makers AMD and Intel, hardware makers Dell, Fujitsu, NetApp, as well as Cloudera, Eucalyptus Systems, GoGrid, and VA Linux Japan. Said Templeton: “Xen Cloud Platform has wide-ranging support from the computer industry, and an eco-system already exists.” He said Citrix intends to use open source and open formats like OVF as an advantage to combat VMware and Microsoft.

Xen Cloud Platformは、仮想マシンソフト「Xen」の開発元である「Xen.org」（実態はシトリックスの傘下にある）が、09年8月31日（米国時間）に発表したもので、Xenを使った仮想マシンシステム間での相互運用性を実現するプラットフォームである。仮想ディスク形式など仮想マシンのフォーマットとして「OVF（Open Virtualization Format）」を採用。Xen Cloud Platformに対応した企業外の仮想マシンサービスと、シトリックスの「XenServer」などを使って企業内で運用する仮想マシンとの間で、相互運用（仮想マシンの移動など）ができるようになるという。
テンプルトンCEOは、インターネット上で提供される外部の仮想マシンサービスを「パブリック/エクスターナルクラウド」、企業が社内で運用する仮想マシン群を「プライベート/インターナルクラウド」と表現し、Xen Cloud Platformがそれらの「クラウド」を連携させる存在であると強調した。
Xen Cloud Platformは、米AMDや米インテルといったプロセサメーカーのほか、米デル、富士通、米ジュニパーネットワークス、米ネットアップといったハードウエアメーカー、米クラウデラ（Cloudera）、米ユーカリプタスシステムズ（Eucalyptus Systems）、米GoGrid、ヴィーエー・リナックス・システムズ・ジャパン（VA Linux Japan）なども参加する。テンプルトンCEOは「Xen Cloud Platformには、コンピュータ業界からの幅広いサポートが寄せられており、既にエコシステムができている」と述べ、オープンソースであることやOVFのようなオープンフォーマットを採用していることなどを強みとして、ヴイエムウェアや米マイクロソフトに対抗していく意向を示した。
