As a long-term Ubuntu (and, before that, Debian) user, I wanted to try Kronos to see how easy it was to get Xen running on a standard Oneiric box for someone who didn’t have – and didn’t want – the detailed knowledge of the guts of the thing. Working with members of the team (very many thanks to Mike and Jon!), I’ve managed successfully to install and run Kronos on my home box.
The aim of the process was two-fold:
1. to see how to install Kronos on a standard (oldish, but decent spec.) home box, without wiping it out or making it unusable;
2. to document the process, with tips, warnings and suggestions.
My view is that if we can get Kronos to a position where it’s plausible for a fairly knowledgeable Ubuntu sysadmin-type user to install it and start playing with it, then people will just have a play with it. If we require people to come to the party with a high spec, new, clean, dedicated box, then we’re going to have fewer people trying it out.
It took some doing, but (again, thanks largely to Jon and Mike), I’ve had success, and I’ve documented what I did over on the wiki. Please look at it, try it, improve it, and critique it. Hopefully we can make it more and more useful, and as Precise (12.04) comes along, things should get even easier.
My plan is to keep trying things out, working with the team as a naive-ish user, and helping to improve Kronos through testing and documentation. I’d welcome any thoughts and suggestions
One note: though I’ve tried to be as careful as possible, and to provide sensible warnings, any damage to your system is on your own head!
