As a guide to the Xen community, I wanted to publish my experience in installing the Xen Cloud Platform, now version 0.1.1, following the XCP Installation Guide.
Before I begin, i will let you know that this was by far the easiest experience I have had installing Xen and HIGHLY recommend it for new users wanting to try the Xen hypervisor.
STEP 1 – Obtain the Media
I went to the XCP Source Code site (http://www.xen.org/products/cloud_source.html) and downloaded the Base ISO package. I then burned this iso image onto a CD using the command: cdrecord -v -dao dev=1,0,0 file.iso. More info on this technique here.
STEP 2 – Install the XCP Package
I setup my server to boot directly from the CD instead of the local hard drive and made sure that my CD from Step 1 was properly inserted into the CD drive. Turn on the machine and away you go. The various question asked from the system were straight forward and easy to answer. After completing the installation, the system will eject the CD and ask you to reboot.
STEP 3 – Running XCP
During the boot process, you will see a nice image of clouds with a bar in the lower left corner tracking progress. Once the system is up and running, you will see the Xen Cloud Platform configuration screen where you can manage the XCP system.
NEXT STEPS – I plan to spend my next set of activities adding VM images to the system and launching various Linux and Windows DomUs. I will publish my actions on this blog once I have completed these steps.
